Variety – Scarlett Johansson is assembling the cast of her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great.”
June Squibb, the Oscar-nominated actor of “Nebraska” will be joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Broadway veteran Jessica Hecht and Erin Kellyman.
The movie, formerly titled “Eleanor, Invisible,” follows Eleanor Morgenstein (Squibb), a 90-year-old woman trying to rebuild her life after the death of her best friend. As a result, she moves back to New York City after living in Florida for decades. Tory Kamen wrote the screenplay.
TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Classics, partnering for the first time, will release “Eleanor the Great” in theaters on a yet-to-be-determined date.
Johansson is producing the film with Jonathan Lia, and Keenan Flynn for These Pictures, Kara Durrett and Jessamine Burgum for Pinky Promise, and Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler of Maven Screen Media. Wayfarer Studios co-financed “Eleanor the Great” with Content Engineers, Pinky Promise and MacPac. Steve Sarowitz, Justin Baldoni, Jamey Heath and Andrew Calof are executive producing for Wayfarer Studios. Ezra Gabay and Raj Kishor Khaware are executive producing on behalf of Content Engineers.
This is Squibb’s second recent starring role following the nonagenarian comedy “Thelma,” which sold to Magnolia following its Sundance premiere. Squibb’s other credits include “Palm Springs,” Pixar’s “Soul” and Amy Schumer’s series “Life & Beth.” She is repped by BRS/Gage Talent Agency. Squibb could have crossed paths with Ejiofor at this year’s Sundance, where the Oscar-nominated actor debuted his sophomore feature “Rob Peace.” Ejiofor, who was recognized by the Academy for “12 Years a Slave,” is preparing to co-star with two Toms: Hiddleston in the adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Life of Chuck” and Hardy in “Venom 3.” Like Johansson, he’s a veteran of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, having appeared in 2022’s blockbuster “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Ejiofor is repped by Markham, Froggatt and Irwin in the UK, CAA in the US, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman LLP.
“Eleanor the Great” reunites Johansson with Hecht after they starred in the Broadway play “A View From The Bridge” (which landed them both a Tony nomination). Hecht recently returned to the stage, opposite Laura Linney, in the play “Summer, 1976. She has appeared on shows like “Friends” and Netflix’s “Special.” Hecht is repped by Innovative Artists. Kellyman will co-star with Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson in Steve McQueen’s film “Blitz for Apple TV+. Another MCU alum, she portrayed Karli Morgenthau in the Disney+ series “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier.” Kellyman is represented by CAA, Curtis Brown, and Goodman Genow Schenkman Smelkinson + Christopher, LLP.

Graziadaily – The Hollywood superstar tells us why being skin-shamed led to the launch of her beauty business. Plus, the products she can’t live without…
Scarlett Johansson knows good skin. That much is clear when she logs on to our Zoom call. Hers is glowing and, if she swapped her black blazer for a lab coat, she would fit LA’s ‘expensive dermatologist’ mould: slicked-back bun, gold-rimmed aviators and barely a hint of make-up. As movie-worthy as it may be, Johansson’s style could never be called contrived. As the co-founder of skincare brand The Outset, which she launched with Kate Foster Lengyel in 2022, there’s no need to act her part. ‘I’ve spent six years working on this project,’ she says. ‘It’s a labour of love.’
Johansson’s desire to be part of the skincare space stems not from a round table with a giant beauty conglomerate and a throng of agents – ‘I never wanted to license my name to a brand, this was something I had to do independently’ – but from a journey that spans her lengthy career.
‘My earliest skincare memory dates back to when I was filming The Horse Whisperer,’ the actor recalls. She was 13 when she starred in the 1998 hit, alongside Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas. ‘I had just gotten my first real breakout and a make-up artist on set spotted it and said, “Whoa, you have Mount Vesuvius on your forehead!” I was so embarrassed, it was awful. I hated him in that moment and, actually, I still hate him.’
Johansson laughs but there’s a steeliness in her tone. The make-up artist handed Johansson a potent solution made with sulphur and zinc to zap breakouts and shrivel them into submission. ‘It paved the way for how I’d treat my skin in the coming years. I went through this cycle of drying it out with products, reeling from the irritation they caused, breaking out. It was a vicious circle.’
As roles in 2003’s Lost In Translation and Girl With A Pearl Earring brought her global levels of fame, tech developments in Hollywood were conspiring against her. ‘The industry switched to digital film,’ she says. ‘That was a terrifying move for actors who were self-conscious about their skin.’

Variety – Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Cord Jefferson will write and executive produce the upcoming Scarlett Johansson limited series, which serves as her first major television role.
The “American Fiction” filmmaker has boarded the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of John Katzenbach’s novel “Just Cause.” Additionally, acclaimed writer John Wells has joined the project, co-writing the series with Jefferson, and will also serve as an executive producer.
“Just Cause,” first published in 1992, tells the story of Matt Cowart, a Miami reporter. In this adaptation, Johansson will portray a female iteration of Cowart, named Madison “Madi” Cowart. The narrative follows Cowart after receiving a letter from a death row inmate claiming innocence. The ensuing investigation not only casts doubt on the inmate’s guilt but also uncovers other hidden horrors.
This project marks the second adaptation of “Just Cause,” the first being a 1995 film featuring Sean Connery, Blair Underwood, Laurence Fishburne, Ed Harris, Ruby Dee and Kate Capshaw. Johansson appeared in the film as the daughter of Connery’s character when she was 10 years old.
Jefferson’s directorial debut film, “American Fiction,” adapted from the book “Erasure” by Percival Everett, received five Oscar nominations, including best picture, actor for Jeffrey Wright, supporting actor for Sterling K. Brown, adapted screenplay for Jefferson and original score for Laura Karpman. Jefferson is the only person of color nominated in two separate categories this year, and is one of only two Black writer-directors to be nominated for their debut movies. The first was Jordan Peele for “Get Out.”
Jefferson has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group that began in 2020. Jefferson won an Emmy for outstanding writing for a limited series for penning the episode “This Extraordinary Being” from HBO’s “Watchmen” alongside Damon Lindelof. In addition to his work on “Watchmen,” Jefferson’s other TV credits include shows such as “Succession,” “The Good Place” and “Master of None.”
Wells, who also has an overall deal with WBTV, is best known for his roles as showrunner and executive producer of “ER” and “The West Wing.” He has been nominated for 25 Primetime Emmy Awards, securing six wins for drama series for “ER” and “The West Wing,” and outstanding special class program for “The West Wing Documentary Special.”
Johansson’s production company, “These Pictures,” is leading the adaptation. Renowned for her portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since “Iron Man 2” in 2010, Johansson has also received two Oscar nominations for her roles in “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), making her one of 12 actors to earn double noms in the same year. Additionally, she won a Tony Award in 2010 for best featured actress in a play for “A View from the Bridge.” She’ll executive produce the series alongside Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn from These Pictures, and Erin Jontow from John Wells Productions.
