Cate Shortland, David Harbour, Devan Coggan, Kevin Feige, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and Scarlett Johansson break down their new Marvel movie ‘Black Widow’.

Abby / July 11th, 2021

Variety – Costume designer Jany Temime says working on Marvel’s “Black Widow” was a dream job. She doesn’t know the exact number of costumes she created, but it was “a lot.”

The costume designer who counts “Judy,” “Skyfall” and three of the Harry Potter films including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II” among her credits, turned to the Russian and Norwegian armies and the circus for “Black Widow” for design inspirations as new characters such as Yelena (Florence Pugh) and the Red Guardian (David Harbour) are introduced.

Temime also inherited Scarlett Johansson in the title role, whose costume that had already been established. This time around, she made a few tweaks to allow for comfort, sculpting it to suit a woman’s body.

Here, she breaks down designing those looks. On Inheriting the Black Widow Outfit and the Marvel Comic Universe

With the Black Widow costume, I changed a few things and adapted it to Scarlett and her body. When you get the design, you have a computer reality and you have the reality of a woman’s body, and you have to put those two things together.

To make it comfortable, we had the base of the costume made from rubbery fabric. I also added in a design graphic to stop it from looking flat, and that was printed out.

Between the seams, we allowed two to three millimeters of elastic fabric to give some room and stretch because I didn’t want her to feel like she was in something tight. I was so happy to hear Scarlett say that it was the most comfortable outfit.

The way we cut it too was glamorous, we cut the waist a little higher because you have to model the suit to the body to flatter it.

I also designed the young widow outfits which they gave me carte blanche with, and again, they were enthusiastic about it. It was such a collaboration and so dreamy. I also understood what [director] Cate Shortland wanted and her vision, especially for that opening sequence.

The stars of Marvel’s “Black Widow” including Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/The Red Guardian), Rachel Weisz (Melina Vostokoff), O-T Fagbenle (Mason) and director Cate Shortland discuss their new Marvel movie with CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell.

Two years since the release of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ the MCU is finally returning to theaters with the much-anticipated (and oft-delayed) ‘Black Widow,’ a solo spy adventure for the character made legendary by Scarlett Johansson. In the movie, Natasha is forced to come face to face with the trauma of her past and with the makeshift family of misfits whose motivations remain murky: There’s father figure the Red Guardian (David Harbour); mother figure Melina (Rachel Weisz); and sister of sorts, Yelena (Florence Pugh), whose reconnection with Natasha drives the story, humor, and heart of director Cate Shortland’s movie. Ahead of the film’s release in theaters – and on Disney+ via Premier Access – Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez spoke with Johansson about finally giving Natasha her solo film and the importance of it being so female-focused, both in front of and behind the camera. Plus, Pugh, Harbour, Weisz, and co-star O-T Fagbenle talk about creating backstories for themselves and bonds with each other (and why Harbour keeps ending up in Russian prisons), while Shortland details why she wanted to make a movie about trauma and “self-forgiveness” and how inspiration drawn from James Bond to ‘Thelma and Louise’ helped her get there.

Or will there be another chapter in the relationship now that it has evolved? Solarresponders
On September 20th, 2017, Hurricane Maria knocked out power to 100% of Puerto Rico’s 3.4 million residents, hospitals, telecommunications, fire stations, and 85% of the police stations. The storm devastated all aspects of the electrical grid (the above ground lines, transformers, power plants) which resulted in the longest blackout in the United States. An estimated 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico as a direct result of Hurricane Maria, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the United States in 100 years. In emergency situations, first responder stations transform into makeshift crisis centers, playing an essential role for local communities. Even though stations are typically outfitted with backup diesel generators, they are vulnerable to supply chain failures and mechanical breakdown. Without any form of power, first responders lose their capacity to: effectively receive emergency calls from 911 dispatchers charge radios and operate computer systems to communicate and coordinate mutual aid operate the stations’ A/C, cooling fans and lights operate the watch-office, which serves as an emergency resource and community haven First responders cannot risk interference with key communication resources, especially while facing unpredictable and dangerous conditions that occur after disasters. When the electric grid fails, first responders are unable to respond. The scale and urgency of this problem is only increasing. As our climate changes, natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity. Action is needed now to ensure the critical needs of first responders in vulnerable regions are met so they can save lives when a disaster occurs.
Cover Girl

Scarlett is featured on the cover of the Winter Issue of The Gentlewoman Magazine promoting Black Widow.
Not that there’s been much acting of late. When the world came to a halt, Scarlett found herself “kind of flummoxed,” she says. “I don’t know, I was having an out-of-body experience.” Without a film to make, she found herself adrift, flirting with a minor existential crisis. “At the beginning, I was doing all this crap that everyone was doing – like, I’ll start learning how to play guitar,” she says, in one of a number of soliloquies during our conversation that veer between earnest self-interrogation and stand-up. “Whatever. In between panicking. And then that stuff sort of faded away, and I realised actually that I exist pretty well in this space. I realise I don’t have to be constantly in motion to survive, I think.” She pauses. “I’ve always had this fear of, what if everything goes away, what will become of me? It’s this great fear of the unknown, and now I’ve been that way for some time, I realise, Oh, actually, you’re still alive.” She smiles and adds cheerfully, “It probably comes from some fear of death, anyway.”
