The Outset is a minimalist skincare brand that provides exceptional products for everyone, doing away with unnecessary ingredients and harmful stereotypes. With an approach to skincare that is mindful and minimalist, Scarlett says she wants The Outset to be "universal, approachable, and as reliable as your favorite white tee - a classic staple"

Harpersbazaar – Since overcoming skin struggles in the public eye, Scarlett Johansson pulled back from beauty endorsements and co-curated her own skincare line, one that bucks trends in favour of dependability. Here she tells Bazaar about the arc of her skincare journey.
If there’s one thing many of us share with multi award-winning Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson – the highest-grossing box office star of all time – it’s the experience of skin struggles.
“I started having acne as a teenager,” she tells me, though in her unique situation, Johansson was working at the time. Since making her movie debut around age 10, the now 38-year-old gained early recognition for various roles before her big breakthrough in Lost in Translation, filmed when she was 17. “I was going through puberty and experiencing that first kind of problem breakout, which I thought would go away with time, but I continued to have acne into my adulthood.” Johansson couldn’t get her head around it. “I just never thought I would struggle; I had so many resources like great dermatologists and beauty experts and make-up artists.” But, in many ways, this privilege complicated matters. “At the time so much of the messaging was like if you have acne or ‘problem skin’, you can make it disappear by stripping it away, and so I was in a cycle of drying out my skin and then having these breakouts and drying out my skin and getting irritation. I would get rid of some spots and then others would turn up in another part of my face – I couldn’t figure out how to heal it for decades.”
Besides having access to professionals on tap, turbulent teenage skin feels particularly relatable. But so, too, does the adult experience of employing harsh active ingredients in a bid for impossible complexion perfection, all the while further unbalancing the microbiome.
“Terrified” of putting any kind of moisturiser on her face, Johansson shares that she did so, as what she perceived a desperate measure. “I was like ‘maybe I’ll just stop using everything and try to heal my skin by putting this moisture back in’, and my skin immediately responded to it and started healing itself.” She didn’t realise at the time, “but I was now nourishing and protecting my skin barrier” – a term penetrating collective consciousness as the pendulum has swung back to simplicity in skincare, following years of complicated, multi-step routines touted as the only way to refine texture and welcome radiance. “I started just using very gentle products, a lot of moisture, and being consistent with my routine. If I veered from it, I would have an issue, and if not, it would stay calm – and that’s that was a huge revelation for me.”
Looking at the star’s skin, you’d never know its chequered past. She is the ultimate ad for her own brand, The Outset, which she co-founded with her business partner, American entrepreneur Kate Foster – who joined Johansson in talking to me about its UK launch. I question if the actress (who chooses to eschew social media in a personal capacity) always saw herself as the face of The Outset, “a reliable line of essentials”?

Elle – Scarlett Johansson hasn’t been to Cannes since she was 20 years old. But looking at her skin, you wouldn’t even believe 18 years have passed. She walked the red carpet for the world premiere of her new Wes Anderson movie Asteroid City. In a very meta role that Anderson wrote specifically for Johansson, the two-time Oscar nominee plays an actress playing an actress.
In real life, Johansson is stepping foot into entrepreneurship. In 2021, after five years of research, the woman who was once the face of L’oreal Paris, co-created The Outset, a vegan, allergy-free beauty line with entrepreneur and former fashion and beauty executive, Kate Foster. Unlike many celebrity beauty brands that choose eponymous labels, Johansson focused on creating a brand featuring clean, simple, affordable products that hold their own without her famous name. The products are super hydrating and contain a plant-based alternative to hyaluronic acid that Johansson and Foster have dubbed Hyaluroset.
As the Firming & Plumping Vegan Collagen Serum is applied to prep her skin for the big evening, Johansson states in a video for ELLE.com, “I love this serum because it’s so moisturizing. It doesn’t pill under makeup and it doesn’t have that tackiness that some products with hyaluronic acid do because it has the vegan alternative to hyaluronic acid.” Johansson’s longtime makeup artist, Frankie Boyd excitedly interjects, “It’s super plumping. Gives you that zhuz you want on the skin. Makes it look super plumped and hydrated.”
As for her makeup, Johannson is a Pat McGrath Labs kind of girl, choosing the foundation for her base face. Good makeup often starts with a great canvas. Boyd shares, “Scarlett takes very good care of her skin so I wanted her to feel as fresh as possible just enhancing her natural radiance with maximum hydration and using minimal coverage on the skin. Keeping in the surreal world of her Prada campaign I added a bold Red-Orange lip to contrast the pink dress with a playful spirit. The eyes are left clean and glossy with a soft spikey lash to pull and accentuate her natural eye shape.”
Johansson is no stranger to the spotlight and we were curious about her camera-ready appeal. The native New Yorker gave ELLE.com exclusive access to how she prepped, primed, and glammed her face for this momentous occasion. Keep scrolling for all the details!
Starting the day off with a simple but effective skincare routine. Today’s a really exciting day – I haven’t done a red carpet in a while. It’s going to be a long day, so hydration is key.

A surprise and a turn no one would have seen coming but Scarlett made a appearance on the new season of StoryBots: Answer Time in the episode 2×04 – Moon were she plays a astronaut who is about to take off but wants to known were the moon parts have gone as she can only see a part of it and things she will crash. It was great to see Scarlett being more kid acting and just having a great time with it all.
I have done all the Screen Captures from the episode and two video clips from the episode that you can watch below, you can now find the caps in the gallery.

Scarlett’s only movie to come out this year Asteroid City was released on Blu-Ray on August 15th, And I got my hands on a close to 1080p blu-ray quality version as I can for now. Scarlett plays Midge Campbell a 50s movie star who get’s stuck in “Asteroid City” when it go’s into lock down but all is not what it looks like and its all a play as well. The movie is very odd but as well has a charm to it and shines with it’s all star cast and yes Scarlett puts in a amazing performance and I hope she gets some award nod’s next year for it.
I have done all the Screen Captures from the movie and its Bouns Features unfortunately there are only two Scarlett is in and its a blink and you miss it from her in them and thats a big shame, you can now find them in the gallery to view.

Scarlett was a guest on the talk show Sunday Today with Willie Geist to promote Asteroid City, Willie came to her outset offices to do the interview and got a tour of it and what go’s on there. They talked about her very long career in hollywood and the work she has done in it, about Asteroid City and how that was filming and about the outset and what is coming up wiht that. All in all it was a good little interview I think.

Scarlett Johansson wowed in white as she channeled her Bette Davis-esque “Asteroid City” character at the NYC premiere. She spoke with “Extra’s” Megan Ryte on being an actor playing an actor in the movie and the “surreal” experience working with the star-studded cast. Scarlett also dished on Father’s Day plans to celebrate hubby Colin Jost.
Scarlett Johansson chats with ET’s Rachel Smith in New York about her new film, ‘Asteroid City,’ hitting theaters on June 23. The actress spills on the audition process for ‘Gravity,’ and how Sandra Bullock ended up getting hired for the role. Plus, Scarlett shares her son’s latest milestone!

After the premier Scarlett made her way to the big after party and this time Colin joined up with her and spent the rest of the night there, Scarlett again change into something new this time a yellow and black little dress but still with a flower on it. HQ photos from the night are in the gallery.
