Gamesradar – Scarlett Johansson and co tell Total Film about digging into the Avenger’s chequered past in Black Widow

Black Widow has been a long time coming. Scarlett Johansson’s red-headed, ass-kicking, non-super superhero became an instant cinematic icon the moment she punched her first nameless goon in Iron Man 2. Yet, though Johansson has spoken about her desire to make a solo movie for almost a decade, the pieces have only just fallen into place for that vision to finally become a reality. Ever since Natasha Romanoff confessed to having “red in my ledger” that she’d like to wipe out in 2012’s Avengers Assemble, viewers have known that there’s been a knotty backstory worth excavating. It’s been a lengthy wait for fans, sure, but not a frustrating one for Johansson.

“I didn’t feel the character needed to be vindicated,” she tells Total Film over Zoom after being asked about the fight to bring a solo Black Widow adventure to fruition. “When we finished Avengers: Endgame, I felt good about the work that we did. I felt that, unless we were going to go on a deep dive – which this film is… I thought, ‘OK, she’s…’”

Johansson stops for a second to meditate over her answer. She’s spent the past 10 years with Marvel’s team of spoiler-stoppers listening to her every conversation and now would not be the time to slip up, especially with the end of her Black Widow journey in sight. Behind her today, however, there are no peering press officers – just a neutral white wall with a solitary window looking out to some greenery.

“I love Natasha,” she starts up again. “She’s had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice.” She’s referring to Black Widow’s controversial decision to sacrifice herself to retrieve the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame. “It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She’s made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that’s her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way. When you look back on the films, that’s in there. All the films have led her to that choice – or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice.”

With Natasha’s final fate sealed and her story satisfyingly told, Johansson was left questioning what was left to tell in a solo outing. For the film to be worthwhile, it would have to be creatively challenging and, as Johansson says, peel back the layers to “find the heartbeat of what this character’s journey has been”.

comicbook – Scarlett Johansson says her Black Widow co-star Florence Pugh has a “really beautiful career ahead of her” as Pugh, a newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, addresses her future as Yelena Belova. Set in-between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, the mid-quel reveals Natasha Romanoff’s (Johansson) Russian family: sister-figure Yelena, Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), a.k.a. the Red Guardian, and Natasha and Yelena’s fellow Red Room-trained super-spy Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz). As the first film of Marvel Studios’ Phase 4, Black Widow will springboard Pugh’s Yelena into the future of the MCU, including her return in the Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld-starring Hawkeye series on Disney+.

“She has a really beautiful career ahead of her… she’s a very special person,” Johansson said in the most recent print issue of Total Film. On potentially succeeding Johansson as Marvel’s new Black Widow, Pugh said, “Even though that’s obviously where everybody wants to go and wants to think about — to think about what’s next — this film never really felt like that was what it was trying to underline.”

“Their stories intersect,” added director Cate Shortland of Natasha and Yelena’s histories as assassins trained by Russia’s Red Room program. “They crash into each other.”

Before Marvel looks to the future of Pugh’s character, Black Widow must first look to the past and reveal Natasha’s family before the Avengers.

“What Yelena does is to kind of point out Natasha’s pain,” Pugh explained. “She’s part of Natasha’s history. And I think that’s why we get this opportunity to look into Natasha’s history, because Yelena comes knocking, and says, ‘Yo, let’s deal with this pain.'”

Johansson, who has played Black Widow since Iron Man 2 in 2010, pointed out Pugh’s Yelena “stands completely on her own. She’s strong and different. She’s so different [to] Natasha.”

Starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Ray Winstone, William Hurt, and Rachel Weisz, Marvel’s Black Widow releases in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.

empireonline Thanks to the Covid pandemic, 2020 was the first year in a long time to leave MCU fans without a single new Marvel Studios story – and one of the biggest movies pushed back several times through the year was Black Widow, the long-awaited solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff. Set before you-know-what happened in Avengers: Endgame, the film will introduce us to Romanoff’s life before we met her in Iron Man 2, exploring her former ‘family’ (including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova), and the ‘red on her ledger’ for which she long fought to atone. As seen in the new issue of Empire, on sale Thursday 13 May, here’s a brand new exclusive image of Natasha and Yelena sharing a dramatic moment.

The film is directed by Berlin Syndrome’s Cate Shortland, who tells Empire that the film has been fully finished – and untouched – for a year now, just waiting to be unleashed on audiences. And this summer it finally will be – Disney has confirmed plans for Black Widow to hit cinemas on 9 July, with a simultaneous release on Disney+ for an additional Premier Access fee. It’s a model that’s clearly worked for the studio, with films like the live-action Mulan and animated adventure Raya And The Last Dragon receiving the same treatment in recent months.

We’ll see what Shortland and her cast – also including Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, and O-T Fagbenle – have cooked up when Black Widow finally makes her superhero landing. See you in the foyer with a massive Tango Ice Blast.

Solarresponders
On September 20th, 2017, Hurricane Maria knocked out power to 100% of Puerto Rico’s 3.4 million residents, hospitals, telecommunications, fire stations, and 85% of the police stations. The storm devastated all aspects of the electrical grid (the above ground lines, transformers, power plants) which resulted in the longest blackout in the United States. An estimated 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico as a direct result of Hurricane Maria, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the United States in 100 years. In emergency situations, first responder stations transform into makeshift crisis centers, playing an essential role for local communities. Even though stations are typically outfitted with backup diesel generators, they are vulnerable to supply chain failures and mechanical breakdown. Without any form of power, first responders lose their capacity to: effectively receive emergency calls from 911 dispatchers charge radios and operate computer systems to communicate and coordinate mutual aid operate the stations’ A/C, cooling fans and lights operate the watch-office, which serves as an emergency resource and community haven First responders cannot risk interference with key communication resources, especially while facing unpredictable and dangerous conditions that occur after disasters. When the electric grid fails, first responders are unable to respond. The scale and urgency of this problem is only increasing. As our climate changes, natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity. Action is needed now to ensure the critical needs of first responders in vulnerable regions are met so they can save lives when a disaster occurs.
Cover Girl

Scarlett is featured on the cover of the Winter Issue of The Gentlewoman Magazine promoting Black Widow.
Not that there’s been much acting of late. When the world came to a halt, Scarlett found herself “kind of flummoxed,” she says. “I don’t know, I was having an out-of-body experience.” Without a film to make, she found herself adrift, flirting with a minor existential crisis. “At the beginning, I was doing all this crap that everyone was doing – like, I’ll start learning how to play guitar,” she says, in one of a number of soliloquies during our conversation that veer between earnest self-interrogation and stand-up. “Whatever. In between panicking. And then that stuff sort of faded away, and I realised actually that I exist pretty well in this space. I realise I don’t have to be constantly in motion to survive, I think.” She pauses. “I’ve always had this fear of, what if everything goes away, what will become of me? It’s this great fear of the unknown, and now I’ve been that way for some time, I realise, Oh, actually, you’re still alive.” She smiles and adds cheerfully, “It probably comes from some fear of death, anyway.”
