Following the overwhelming success of the 2005 celebrity charm bracelet in aid of Cancer Research UK, Wallis is delighted to launch the stunning 2007 version, a long silver rope charm necklace, decorated with six unique charms each designed by a well-know celebrity or designer.

Designers were asked to take inspiration from whatever they liked, or from what they are best known for. They then had to sketch their charm, choose the colour and material and give it a name.

Well-known designers of the charms include Scarlett Johansson, who designed a delicate lily in white, yellow and orange enamel, because ‘I’ve always loved enamel jewellery and I was looking at a lily when approached about the project.’ Scarlett agreed to take part because she believes that ‘in today’s world, cancer affects everyone, whether it’s your own personal crisis or that of someone you know.’ She adds, ‘any opportunity to support cancer research brings us closer to a cure.’

Comedienne Catherine Tate’s contribution is a silver metal heart with a cut-out star at the base. ‘The charm is titled Open Heart as I believe that it is important to remain open-hearted to all life’s experiences. Cancer Research UK does fantastic work and I am happy to help in any way.’

Christian Louboutin’s charm is a small golden shoe with his signature red heel and he requested that it hang from a ‘tiny ball chain’. Famous potter Grayson Perry has designed The Medicine Pot, a three-dimensional miniature vase featuring his childhood toy Alan Measles on the front and his trademark symbol on the back. He says ‘the charm is a pot containing medicine to cure cancer. Alan Measles, my teddy bear and personal god, holds herbs in his paws.’

‘I chose the fish for two reasons,’ says Stephen Webster of his elegant and articulated silver fish skeleton charm. ‘It was inspired by and named after the 1960’s cartoon Top Cat, which was my favourite cartoon as a child and has a cheerful roguishness about it. Plus, for some reason I am very attracted to fish. I collect big glass fish from the 50’s and 60’s, I have a coffee table aquarium, am married to a Piscean and I enjoy sushi.’ Famous for distinctive and bold jewellery, Webster agreed to get involved ‘because my mother died of breast cancer, which of course had a big impact on me and my family. We all want to feel our charitable energy should be focused towards helping make a difference for that cause.’

Kate Moss’ charm is a pretty turquoise and silver swallow, a dainty device fast becoming her fashion talisman. Kate says, ‘I am happy to give my support to help fund crucial research, as so many lives are affected by this terrible disease’.

Retailing at £25 each, £10 from each necklace sold will go towards Cancer Research UK’s vital work conquering cancer through world-class research. The charity is the largest single funder of cancer research in the UK, supporting the work of over 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Richard Taylor, Cancer Research UK’s Executive Director, Fundraising and Supporter Marketing, says ‘We’re thrilled to have the support of Wallis and these talented designers and celebrities. The charm necklace is a great way for people to show their support for Cancer Research UK and raise money for research into a disease which will affect more than one in three people at some point in their lives.’

The Cancer Research UK Charm Necklace will be on sale from beginning September and will be available exclusively from Wallis stores across the UK and from www.wallis.co.uk. Only 25,000 necklaces are being produced, making this limited edition accessory a real signature piece.
