GMA – Scarlett Johansson has embodied the bravery and empowerment that her Marvel character Black Widow has shown on screen for almost a decade.

Now, the Oscar-nominated actress can finally admit that she’s getting her own standalone film in May.

“Can I finally say that?” she told ABC News’ Adrienne Bankert in an interview that was shot at Comic-Con International: San Diego this weekend and aired Monday on “GMA.”

In the revealing interview, the actress talked about her defining sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame” and how she feels like this is icing for her Marvel Cinematic Universe career.

“I would’ve been happy to, you know, to end it at ‘Endgame’ and walk away,” she said. “I was proud of the work that we had all done together, and that the only reason to do this standalone would be to elevate the genre in some way. And so hopefully, we will have.”

Speaking of that sacrifice, it’s still unknown if this film will be a prequel or some kind of resurrection, but the actress is teasing a little of what fans can expect. She also shared it’s currently in production.

“You actually get to all the questions you may have had about this mysterious character and who she is,” Johansson said. “Where she comes from, her makeup, who she knows, like, what makes her her? What are the secrets of the past that haunt her?”

Johansson will follow in the footsteps of Brie Larson’s “Captain Marvel” as the second female hero to lead her own MCU film.

“It’s a little bit scary not having the kind of cushion of my fellow Avengers around,” she went on. “You kind of feel like you put yourself out there in a different way because the character stands on her own.”

Johansson says she feels physically ready though.

After her interview with Entertainment Weekly Scarlett and the cast of Black Window went and did a little photoshoot for them before leaving to go back to filming the movie in London. I have added in two HQ photos from it and hope one day to get the rest.

usatoday – SAN DIEGO — Scarlett Johansson would have happily ended her run as Avengers superspy Black Widow with her emotional and fatal finale in “Avengers: Endgame.”

But like any good secret agent, Johansson got sucked back into the game – again, very happily — for her own Marvel solo project “Black Widow” (in theaters May 1, 2020). Directed by Cate Shortland (“Lore”), the movie kicks off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and had a primetime spot Saturday at Marvel’s Comic-Con presentation.

Currently filming in London, “Black Widow” is “a mature step” in Marvel’s growing universe, Johansson tells USA TODAY. “Even though there’s a lot of different elements in some facets of the character to explore, I was happy with the work that I did. The only reason to do this film is really to elevate the genre in a way. It feels like the right time.”

Marvel showed a spy-tinged “Black Widow” trailer to the Comic-Con crowd that offered a glimpse at the ballet company/Black Widow program that trained Russian girls to be super-assassins, a “John Wick”-esque fight between Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff and her “sister” Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) that involves guns, knives and a shower curtain, and a throwdown between Natasha and debuting supervillain Taskmaster.

“It’s a remarkable, unique story,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says of “Black Widow,” which is set after the events of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” “People think they know everything there is to know about the Black Widow. I promise you they do not. We tapped into a period in her life that we’ve never explored before and how that affects her going forward.”

So far, those fights with Johansson have been “just amazing moments that I’ll think back to for the rest of my life,” Pugh said, who later admitted that her favorite Yelena character quirk is “how she does two ponytails instead of one.”

Rachel Weisz’s Melina has cycled through the Red Room program five times and is quite formidable herself. “No shower curtains but l have ‘Widow Bites’ and lots of action scenes,” Weisz said.

“Black Widow” features “three really complicated, powerful but vulnerable female characters. I can’t think of any action movie that is like that,” Weisz added. “So I would say it’s completely new.”

“Stranger Things” star David Harbour plays Alexei, aka Red Guardian, the Soviets’ answer to Captain America developed during the Cold War. “In your cliche mind, you go like, ‘Oh this is what it’s going to be. ‘And it’s like, ‘No, it’s surprise, surprise, surprise.’ He will surprise you,” said Harbour, who wore a Cap T-shirt for the occasion.

And Mason, played by O-T Fagbenle (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), is a “fixer” of sorts with “the ability to get things for spies and superheroes who might find it hard to get otherwise,” said the British actor. He also teases an “interesting romantic conflict” between Mason and Natasha: “Sometimes you want things that aren’t practical, and your heart and the nature of your life doesn’t necessarily coalesce to provide that kind of connection.”

Johansson had been talking about and developing a “Black Widow” movie with Kevin Feige for eight years and thinks the timing couldn’t be better for her, personally.

“I definitely feel like the film that we’re making right now and this incarnation of Natasha, in all of her sort of strength and her vulnerability and the strengths she finds in her own vulnerability, is something that I don’t think I could have done 10 years ago,” Johansson said.

Johansson also felt an almost eerie sense of connection when Baumbach handed her the monologue over lunch in the fall of 2017.“It was the first piece Noah gave me, and it felt familiar somehow, but not because of what I’d been experiencing then,” says the actress, 34, who at the time was embroiled in her own separation, from French curator Romain Dauriac. “But maybe because of how I grew up, and the dynamic between my parents—or maybe because I’ve known women who’ve dedicated themselves to their partner’s vision and then come out of this decade-long relationship feeling almost like a ghost.” She adds that she, too, has been in that place, and that the truth in Nicole’s story was what excited her. “I didn’t hesitate at all, because I knew that I’d have the opportunity to say those words,” she says. “Noah gave me that monologue, and I was like, ‘Well, shit, come on.’ Am I going to be like, ‘Nah, I’m good—let some other actor have that’? No way.”
