thejc – The UK Jewish Film Festival has announced a prestigious line-up for 2019, including the Oscar-tipped JoJo Rabbit starring Scarlett Johansson and UK premiers of spy drama The Operative, starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman, and comedy My Polish Honeymoon.

The festival will run from November 6-21 at 15 cinemas across London. In addition, festival highlights will be shown in 20 towns and cities across England, Scotland and Wales, running until December 12.

The programme, which features 96 films and discussions with directors, actors, politicians and journalists, is the largest of its kind in the world. It includes eight world premieres, one European premiere, 40 UK premieres, and films from 24 countries, including 23 films from the UK.

The opening night gala will host a showing of My Polish Honeymoon, a debut feature from French director Élise Otzenberger. The comedy follows a recently-married Parisian couple as they head off on a belated honeymoon to Poland, and becomes a story about rediscovering roots and being Jewish today.

The Oscar-tipped Jojo Rabbit, which recently won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, will be the centrepiece of the closing night gala. Written and directed by Taika Waititi (Jewish on his mother’s side; his father is Maori), this Second World War satire follows Jojo, a lonely German boy whose imaginary friend is an idiotic Adolf Hitler. Jojo’s world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic.

The centrepiece gala will see the UK premiere of The Operative, directed by Yuval Adler and starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman. British citizen Rachel is a rootless polyglot, but with a deep love for Israel – traits that make her an ideal Mossad agent. Recruited by a Berlin-based British Jew, she is sent to Tehran to spy on a businessman. Based on the Israeli novel? The English Teacher,?The Operative?asks whether love for a man is more important than service to your nation.

The documentary gala hosts the world premiere of The Human Factor, followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Dror Moreh (The Gatekeepers), and producer Teddy Leifer (Oscar nominee for The Invisible War, Oscar winner for Icarus). With the end of the Cold War and America becoming a sole global superpower, the 1990s brought the promise of a new world order – and hopes for a comprehensive peace between Israel and two of its bitterest enemies, the Palestinians and Syria. Featuring key players, the documentary looks back at a decade which started with the signing of the Oslo Accords and ended with a bitter sense of disillusionment, leading to the Second Intifada.

Michael Etherton, Chief Executive of UK Jewish Film, said: “We are the UK’s only film festival dedicated to telling stories about Jewish life and experience, and the majority of our UK and international films would not otherwise make it to cinemas or streaming services.

“At a time of increasing fears about the rise of racism, including antisemitism, the UK Jewish Film Festival has a crucial role to play in making sure that Jewish life and culture is being adequately represented on our cinema screens.

“That’s why this year, with the support of the BFI Audience Fund, we are unrolling an extensive and important nationwide tour. From Inverness to Brighton and Bangor to Norwich, we will reveal wonderful cinematic snapshots of Jewish life to diverse audiences who may not otherwise have any interaction with Jewish culture.”

indiewire – After directing the Marvel blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok” to the tune of $854 million worldwide, Taika Waititi is returning to his indie roots this fall with “Jojo Rabbit.” Billed by distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures as an “anti-hate satire,” Waititi’s latest is set in Nazi Germany and follows a young boy (newcomer Roman Griffin Davis, destined for breakout status) whose nationalism is challenged after his mother (Scarlett Johansson) agrees to hide a young Jewish woman (Thomasin McKenzie) in their home. Waititi has stirred up headlines for portraying an imaginary Adolf Hitler in the movie, but it’s his bold visual style and idiosyncratic humor that will most likely leave people talking

First thing first I no we are a little late on this news but things have been going on behind the scenes of the site and we have now moved host’s and as you should all see the gallery has a new url with it being on this site now and not it’s own URL, I am still working things out so if something is not working right send me a email or look back later to see if I have got to it yet. But good news no more add’s

Avclub – Taika Waititi is a passionate and meticulous filmmaker, who owns a dazzling array of fruit-themed tees and rompers. To ensure his first tentpole film, Thor: Ragnarok, was a smashing success, Waititi voiced the delightful rock-monster Korg, played one of three heads on an alien, and donned a motion-capture suit to play Surtur and, occasionally, the Hulk himself. So, when the What We Do In The Shadows filmmaker announced plans to play an imaginary Hitler in his own “Nazi comedy,” Jojo Rabbit, you must have known he wasn’t going to merely play someone named Adolf Hitler.

Sure enough, in the first photo of Waititi in the role, the Hunt For The Wilderpeople director has all the Hitler accoutrements, including the mustache, swastika, and slicked-down hair.

Again, we’ll remind you that Waititi is playing an imaginary Hitler, which is presumably why Scarlett Johansson, who stars as Mrs. Betzler, is smiling in the general direction of the Nazi leader and her son Jojo, played by Roman Griffin. The film centers on young Jojo, a very lonely boy who is also not all that well-informed, as the Hitler he conjures is a “Polynesian Jew,” as Waititi himself described it. Earlier this month, Waititi underscored the fact that Jojo Rabbit is a satirical work.

To help offset the führer fuckery above, here’s another set photo, which Waititi tweeted along with some of his renowned Avengers knowledge.

Jojo Rabbit is currently in production, and there’s currently no word on a release date.

Variety Scarlett Johansson is in final negotiations to star in Fox Searchlight’s World War II film “Jojo Rabbit,” sources tell Variety.

The project is Taika Waititi’s follow-up to “Thor: Ragnarok,” and is set during World War II and centers on a young German boy who finds out that his mother, to be played by Johansson, is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

While Waititi has been offered several films following the success of “Thor: Ragnarok,” the director made it clear that “Jojo Rabbit” would be his next film. While Waititi has been busy filming his “What We Do in the Shadows” pilot, he was able to meet with Johansson prior to that production to discuss the role.

With Johansson now on board, Waititi will now look to cast the young boy role.

Waititi penned the script and will produce alongside Carthew Neal and Chelsea Winstanley. Production is expected to start this spring.

The film would mark a change of pace for Johansson, who has been focused on action and comedy movies, including last year’s “Ghost in the Shell” and the Sony comedy “Rough Night.” She can be seen next in “Avengers: Infinity War” and is also lending her voice to Wes Anderson’s animated “Isle of Dogs.” She also recently signed on to the Focus drama “Reflective Light.”

She is repped by CAA.

Johansson also felt an almost eerie sense of connection when Baumbach handed her the monologue over lunch in the fall of 2017.“It was the first piece Noah gave me, and it felt familiar somehow, but not because of what I’d been experiencing then,” says the actress, 34, who at the time was embroiled in her own separation, from French curator Romain Dauriac. “But maybe because of how I grew up, and the dynamic between my parents—or maybe because I’ve known women who’ve dedicated themselves to their partner’s vision and then come out of this decade-long relationship feeling almost like a ghost.” She adds that she, too, has been in that place, and that the truth in Nicole’s story was what excited her. “I didn’t hesitate at all, because I knew that I’d have the opportunity to say those words,” she says. “Noah gave me that monologue, and I was like, ‘Well, shit, come on.’ Am I going to be like, ‘Nah, I’m good—let some other actor have that’? No way.”
