EW got to sit down with Scarlett and talk about Captain America: Civil War and give us the first still from the movie as well, I will add the Hq version when I can.

Black Widow never has it easy.

Robert Downey Jr. on the politics of Iron Man in ‘Civil War’
‘Captain America: Civil War’: Chris Evans on Cap’s fight for Winter Soldier
Black Panther: Marvel’s history-making hero arrives onscreen
Onscreen, Natasha Romanov has an agonizing backstory and is working like hell to do enough good to erase the red from her moral ledger, redeeming a history of bad deeds that we are only allowed to imagine with acts of heroism that defy belief.

Offscreen, much of what Scarlett Johansson’s character does is scrutinized through the lens of gender politics. As one of the few female protagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (until recently), some view her not just as an individual character but as a representative for all womankind. That’s heavy lifting even for a superhero.

Amid accusations that her story arc in Avengers: Age of Ultron was stereotyped and offensive — because, like Tony Stark, she expressed a desire to step back from saving the world (and maybe find someone in it to love, and love her back) — Black Widow became a lightning rod.

Some accused writer-director Joss Whedon of sexism for a storyline that involved Widow developing romantic feelings for Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner in the comic-book version of the Beauty and the Beast folktale. Others were outraged that Widow expressed regret over the juvenile assassin program that forced her to be sterilized. Still others took offense at that complaint, saying the desire to have a family doesn’t mean a woman can’t have a career (beating the hell out of evildoers, or otherwise).

NPR’s pop culture critic Linda Holmes astutely noted that even if you swapped out Widow’s story in Ultron with the arcs of any of her male co-Avengers, each would still “raise questions of whether the story was influenced by gender stereotypes.” If she was Iron Man, she’d be the problem-causer. If she was Captain America, she’d be the uptight one. If she was Hulk, she’d have out-of-control emotions. And so on …

Add to that the scarcity of Black Widow toys, which caused universal uproar, even from Ruffalo, who tweeted about the need for Marvel merchandising to do a better job of inviting young girls to play in this universe, and Natasha Romanov starts to emerge not just as a warrior but a battlefield.

Which brings us to Captain America: Civil War. Where does Natasha’s fifth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe find her?

This time, she’s on the side of order, aligning — at least for a while — with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in trying to get Captain America to honor the global Sokovia Accords that force “enhanced individuals” to operate under government control.

In one scene EW watched being filmed this summer, she and Tony Stark have a quiet moment after being given an ultimatum to bring down the rogue Cap — or else the U.S. government will do it in permanent fashion.

Stark rubs at the center of his chest, where his ARC reactor was once embedded. “You know the problem with a fully functional heart…? It’s stressful,” he tells Natasha.

She’s all business: “We are painfully understaffed.”

“It’d be pretty awesome if we had a Hulk,” he tells her.

But they don’t. And Widow, still harboring feelings for Bruce Banner, who was last seen venturing off into self-imposed isolation in the Avengers’ Quinjet — knows that better than anyone.

During a break in filming, we caught up with Johansson, and asked what she thinks of the tug-of-war over her character.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where is Natasha’s head these days? In what state do we find her after the events of Age of Ultron?
SCARLET JOHANSSON: My gosh, this is like a therapy session! When we last saw her I think the stakes were astronomical. And she basically had to make this choice between [duty] and what she probably deserves. I think up until this point, she has put the hours in and is ready for…

To be, or not to be, an Avenger?
[Laughs] You know, I don’t think she’s ever aspired to become an Avenger. That’s not really a choice that she made. It’s kind of like the events in her life led her to that point and when we see her [in Civil War], she’s finally capable of making a choice for herself. Which is kind of a milestone in someone’s life when they’ve not really participated in the decisions that were made for them. She’s finally at a place where she’s going, “Okay, I actually kind of know what I want. And I think I kind of deserve it.”

But she’s still in the fight. So is that what she wants?
Unfortunately the events that took place … she has this kind of greater calling and this huge pull towards doing what’s right for the greater good. And she chooses that, and it’s a really heroic thing that she does, I think.

Abby December 3rd, 2015 Articles & Interview

Scarlett Johansson has always been an icon for old Hollywood glamour, so her representation of the Dolce & Gabbana beauty line is a perfect fit. And the brand is now releasing a limited edition scent for the holidays, The One Essence, and bringing Johansson back into the family fold for an exclusive Holiday video promoting the fragrance with her longtime D&G co-star Matthew McConaughey.

To go along with the holiday campaign and video, ScarJo has shared some of her favourite Christmas memories and traditions with us:

“I think of vanilla as being a Christmas scent because my family cooks a Christmas pudding every year that is like a tapioca kind of pudding, with warm fruit sauce. It cooks for the entire day before and the entire house smells of fresh vanilla. So it is a very Christmassy scent to me.”

My favourite Christmas atmosphere is a very cosy one because my family usually stays in their pyjamas all day, cooks in their pyjamas, and then, you know, at night we might change into something comfortable. It’s a very warm and cosy family atmosphere that we have for Christmas. Just comfortable, no stress, no crazy dressing up so everybody is very relaxed.”

“My favourite Christmas memory is lying with my sister underneath the Christmas tree with all the lights and the ornaments. I remember that being super magical, the way it looked, and just talking with my sister about what we thought we were going to get for Christmas.”

In support of the (SHOPATHON)RED – a month long holiday shopping extravaganza launching on World AIDS Day, December 1 2015 – actress Scarlett Johansson appears as fictional home shopping television host, named ‘Paisley Mantooth’, on the set of a parody infomercial promoting more than 100 (RED) products, every one of which raises money for the Global Fund to fight AIDS

In 2007, Bono helped launch his (Red) organization—which recruited major companies to fork over some of their mall-going customers’ money to fund the fight against AIDS—within Vanity Fair’s very pages. Eight years and $320 million later in its revolutionary crusade against the pandemic, the conscious consumerism effort co-founded by Bobby Shriver is still going strong, and has a new holiday initiative—(Red)Shopathon—that will kick off on December 1, World AIDS Day.

In the spirit of the charitable holiday extravaganza, Scarlett Johansson doffed her movie-star cap for commercial jingle-singing duties, belting out a tune written by Barry Manilow and brokered by Jimmy Kimmel.

Embattled former Sony chairperson Amy Pascal is producing a movie about Gamergate, one that might star Scarlett Johansson as developer Zoe Quinn. Deadline is reporting the movie will be based on Quinn’s upcoming memoir Crash Override: How to Save the Internet From Itself. (It’s on track to be published next year.) The movie will follow Quinn after a blog post by an ex-boyfriend led to months of abuse and harassment, behavior that ultimately exploded into the nebulous movement known as Gamergate. Quinn confirmed the memoir and movie’s legitimacy on Twitter by linking out to Deadline’s report. TheWrap’s Jeff Sneider is reporting that Johansson is one of several actresses interested in portraying Quinn.

Before Gamergate erupted into the confusing collective it remains today, Quinn was best known for making indie games like Depression Quest that were critically acclaimed and relatively simple. Crash Override cribs its title from the online harassment support group Quinn started with Alex Lifschitz in January as a means of pushing back against the abuse directed at her and other female figures in gaming. If you’ve followed Gamergate since its eruption last year, the fact that it’s being turned into a major motion picture with an established star is probably befuddling. People on the internet (including its constituent members) still can’t agree on what exactly Gamergate is — A campaign for ethics in gaming journalism? A misogynist harassment campaign? A borderline terrorist organization? The thought of jamming all of that complexity into a two-hour feature film is intimidating, to say the least.

“Gaming and internet message boards used to be niche interests, mostly for young men. In the past few years, however, they’ve gone mainstream,” wrote Quinn in her proposal. “Millions of people have taken an interest in the platforms, image boards, and discussion forums that once belonged by default to a much smaller population… Like the rest of us, they’re just here to play games. But a vocal minority are clinging onto the brand of Cheetos-and-Mountain-Dew exclusionary identity ‘hardcore gamer,’ muttering ‘fu*kin’ casuals’ under their breath.”

When you leave Saturday Night Live, you might write a book, or work on a movie, or start a TV empire. Or, you might get Scarlett Johansson to read Book of Deuteronomy verses in a sexy voice. Because that’s a thing you do if you’re Mike O’Brien, who has a new comedy album out now called Tasty Radio.

On this track, called “Sexy Bible,” it’s coming from WSEX Sexy Talk Radio – each track is from a different radio station – you can hear Johansson reading passages about stoning rebellious youngsters, shaving the head of a woman, and what animals you’re allowed to eat.

Okay, okay, yes, Scarlett Johansson can make just about anything sound sexy. We get it, O’Brien. Also, the Old Testament books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus are really pretty hilarious, full of laws and rules that don’t make a lot of sense in the modern world. That was the appeal to the comedian, as he told Rolling Stone, “The Old Testament is filled with beautiful stuff, but also some weirdly specific, random rules and speeches. Deuteronomy could be called ‘Laws for Stuff That Will Never Apply to 99% of Civilization,’ like what to do with a dead animal you find [or] what to do to a woman who grabs the junk of a guy who her husband is fighting. [It’s] a very funny time capsule of what those guys were worried about back then.”

There’s a second Sexy Bible track on there, too, where you can hear her say “boils” and “excrement.” You’re welcome, world.

Tasty Radio is available now, and also features Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Jorma Taccone, and more. It’s pretty funny.

Abby October 25th, 2015 Ghost In The Shell

Ghost in the Shell – a live action adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series – has been trapped in development hell for quite some time. The only real concrete information that has been released for fans is the fact that it will star modern day action queen Scarlett Johansson. Now, it seems the creative forces behind the project have taken a major step forward.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Herman – who most recently penned the script for the highly acclaimed Straight Outta Compton – has been tapped to write the screenplay for Ghost in the Shell. Previous drafts of the script have already been written by William Wheeler and Jamie Moss, with Herman brought in to fine-tune weaker elements of the script – much like he did for the N.W.A biopic.

For those unaware, Ghost in the Shell centers on a Special Forces cyborg (Johansson) in charge of Section 9, a unit employed by a company called Hanka Robotics. The unit is tasked with the job of taking down terrorists and criminals led by a mastermind called The Laughing Man – a fanatic hacker intent on taking down Hanka Robotics. The film is based on a popular Japanese manga series of the same name, written by Masamune Shirow.

This news of Herman’s hiring should come as pleasant reveal for fans of Ghost in the Shell who have trepidations regarding the upcoming film. The project has recently come under fire for casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead. Despite her increasingly strong repertoire in the action genre as of late – with a big presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the surprise success of Lucy – many saw her casting as odd due to her being a white American woman, and the franchise is very much Japanese. This has led to many accusations of Hollywood of once again whitewashing an international property.

If the success of his previous outings are anything to go by, Herman’s talents as a screenwriter seem to have no issue in crossing genres or cultures. In addition to the upcoming Ghost in the Shell, he has added his touch to a remake of Scarface, as well as The Birds. This move should instill confidence that the man’s talents are not restricted to specific styles, settings, or characters, and that he is trusted by studios with fairly sacred properties.

We will bring you more news about Ghost in the Shell as it becomes available to us. For now, it is set to hit theaters on March 31, 2017.

Johansson also felt an almost eerie sense of connection when Baumbach handed her the monologue over lunch in the fall of 2017.“It was the first piece Noah gave me, and it felt familiar somehow, but not because of what I’d been experiencing then,” says the actress, 34, who at the time was embroiled in her own separation, from French curator Romain Dauriac. “But maybe because of how I grew up, and the dynamic between my parents—or maybe because I’ve known women who’ve dedicated themselves to their partner’s vision and then come out of this decade-long relationship feeling almost like a ghost.” She adds that she, too, has been in that place, and that the truth in Nicole’s story was what excited her. “I didn’t hesitate at all, because I knew that I’d have the opportunity to say those words,” she says. “Noah gave me that monologue, and I was like, ‘Well, shit, come on.’ Am I going to be like, ‘Nah, I’m good—let some other actor have that’? No way.”
