WSJ magazine – April 2014 Scans

Scarlett is on the cover of the new WSJ magazine for April 2014, There are some great shoots as well as her talking on Motherhood.

IN THE SNOW, New York City becomes a fantasy version of itself. A blanket of winter weather slows this frantic city down, hushes the hurly-burly, covers it in a quiet beauty that turns a mundane walk into a romantic stroll. Snowy New York is the New York you dreamed of: old-fashioned, elegant, irresistible. Until a city bus plows by at 40 mph and sprays you with muddy, brown slush.

I am going to meet Scarlett Johansson for lunch, and the midday snowfall somehow feels appropriate. By now it’s a thoroughly accepted premise that Johansson is herself a romantic throwback, a bit of an old-fashioned fantasy—a smoky-voiced reminder of a lush, more glamorous show-business era. I believe this makes me the 100,000th person to describe Johansson as “smoky-voiced,” for which I should have my computer keyboard stripped and tossed into the Hudson. But the cliché is true. So is the throwback part. Johansson’s choice of a meeting location today is not a sleek, modern aerie with angular furniture and Euro-disco, but the Carlyle Hotel, off Madison Avenue, a low-lit classic merrily frozen in time.

From big-budget blockbusters to acclaimed independent films, Scarlett Johansson’s path to success has been anything but obvious. Jason Gay spoke with Johannson for this month’s WSJ. Magazine cover story, and joins the News Hub to discuss what’s next for the actress. Photo: Alasdair McLellan for WSJ. Magazine.

In the snow, I am 20 minutes late. She is 25 minutes late. This is OK. It doesn’t feel like a day to rush. When she arrives, she’s dressed in a black goose-down coat, a thick striped sweater and black wool pants, and she is wearing a pair of tortoiseshell eyeglasses that would comfortably fit on the nose of a prep-school English teacher. There is quick chatter about the weather and the craziness and the way the taxis and buses were swerving all over the road. And of course how this city looks perfect through it all. “A lot of people have that thing in New York where they need to get out—they’re like, ‘Oh you have to get out in order to love it,’ ” Johansson says. “I never had that.”

Scarlett Johansson on ‘Avengers 2,’ Robert Redford, and Black Widow’s Future

You know what the best thing is about this Friday (April 4)? We’re getting a double helping of Scarlett Johansson in movie theaters — as Black Widow in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and as an alien seductress who likes to eat her men whole in “Under the Skin.”

While “Under the Skin” is definitely worth checking out, it may be a little hard to find. So most of us will watch Scarlett take her third turn as super-agent Natasha Romanoff in “Captain America,” where — alongside Cap (Chris Evans), the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) — she hunts down a lethal assassin and uncovers a conspiracy to bring down the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

The movie reunites Scarlett with Robert Redford, who plays the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and who directed and starred with the then-12-year-old actress in “The Horse Whisperer.” We sat down with the lovely Ms. Johansson (who is currently expecting her first child) to talk about that, what happens to the Widow in the next “Avengers” movie, and what Natasha does on her days off.

Moviefone: It’s great to see watch Black Widow evolve over the course of three movies. Did you know what was planned from the start?
Scarlett Johansson: I mean, that was the intention, of course, when I signed up for “Iron Man 2.” The hope was that the audience would respond to my version of the Widow Natasha and want to see more. Because, I mean, I had a wonderful time doing it but you just sort of got to be introduced to the character. And I think the idea of revealing her true identity at the end was in the hopes that people would want to kind of take that and run with it. Of course, I had a really fun, playful sequence in the end there.

Scarlett Johansson defends her decision to go fully nude in new film Under The Skin

Scarlett Johansson has defended her decision to show full frontal nudity in her new movie Under The Skin.
The actress is seen fully naked but heavily blurred in stills from the movie, which have been setting message boards alight across the web.
The stills have been quietly released amid an undergound viral marketing campaign driving traffic to a site promoting the low-budget sci-fi movie, adapted from a Michel Faber novel.

And Scarlett has defended her choice to go nude in the movie, saying it had a ‘lot of intention behind it’.
‘The nudity is written in to the script and I hope the audience agrees that it’s, you know, it’s not really indulging,’ she told MTV.
‘It’s almost like biological in a weird way, I think, and there is a lot of intention behind it.’

And she admitted she did feel self-conscious before the filming.
‘You know I’m not a nudist by nature so of course you feel self-conscious about it beforehand.
‘But it actually allowed me to realize and explore what kind of judgments I had about myself because I had to abandon those and really see myself as blank sort of slate and it was an interesting exercise for sure.’
Along with the chatter generated by the ‘leaked’ nude pictures of Scarlett, a viral marketing campaign is also picking up interest in the film.
Rather than splashing out on big billboards, the marketing team have placed enticing adverts in the ‘personal section’ of Craigslist sites.

Marvel Studios Developing Stand-Alone Black Widow Film for Scarlett Johansson?

Marvel Studios is developing a film that would revolve around Black Widow, the character played by Scarlett Johansson in the “Iron Man” and “The Avengers” franchises.

Studio president Kevin Feige has long been high on the character even before her role was expanded for April’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” When promoting the homevideo release for “Iron Man 2,” in 2010, he said, “We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett (Johansson) about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but ‘The Avengers’ comes first.”

But Feige is once again discussing the prospects for a Black Widow film now that “The Winter Soldier” is about to be released on April 4.

“We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film,” Feige told Total Film magazine in a new interview about the “Captain America” sequel. “We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of ‘Winter Soldier’ than it is at the beginning.”

According to Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, Black Widow’s storyline in “The Winter Soldier” revolves around “her coming to terms with her history, that she’s been a spy, and spies aren’t necessarily trustworthy,” he told Total Film.

That will be further explored in “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” out in 2015. Film starts production in March.

“(Black) Widow’s part in that is very big,” Feige said. “We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that. When we meet the Avengers at the top of ‘Age of Ultron,’ it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the first film. Partially, that’s because we love the rhythm that the comicbooks have developed — each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again.”

It’s unclear whether Marvel hopes to have a Black Widow movie become part of its third phase of films, which so far includes “Ant-Man,” “Doctor Strange” and the third installments of “The Avengers” and “Captain America.”
